Heiko Maas

Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection

Today, we take for granted women’s suffrage, the eight-hour day, our social state governed by the rule of law, and so much more. Yet we wouldn’t have any of this if it hadn’t been for the Weimar Republic. The women and men who fought relentlessly for Germany’s first democracy in the difficult conditions of that era deserve to be remembered.

Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert

President of Germany’s parliament

Without even looking at what it achieved, the Weimar National Assembly already stands out in the history of German democracy as the first and only constitutional convention ever chosen by voters in general, democratic elections. It was and still is linked with the introduction of women’s suffrage. With this advance, the politically rather backwards Germany of the time overtook the neighboring long-standing democracies that were looked to as progressive societies. This is one of Weimar democracy’s few lasting achievements.

Stefan Wolf

Senior Mayor of the City of Weimar

The Weimar Constitution was the constitution of the first German democracy and is in large part the foundation of today’s constitution, our Basic Law. The Weimar Constitution created the first democracy in Germany. It forms in large part the foundation of today’s Basic Law. It was discussed and laid down in writing in the German National Theater in Weimar between February 6 and July 30, 1919. This process was a large, no, an enormously significant act: an intellectual and parliamentary tour de force that we would all do well to remember.

Georg Fahrenschon

President of the association of German savings banks

The importance of savings and individual retirement planning was already recognized back in the times of the Weimar Republic. Its leaders transformed savings banks into institutions incorporated under public law in 1931. This legal form was intended to protect the banks in difficult times and to help them keep their customers for good.  These statesmen were acting on their conviction that people need a strong financial partner with local roots by their side during all of the economy’s upswings and downturns, especially in times of crisis. This decision taken during the Weimar Republic is still paying off today. As public-law institutions, savings banks improve people’s lives day in and day out in all over today’s Germany.

Carsten Schneider

Deputy Chairman of the Social-Democrats’ group in the German Bundestag

I will do all I can to make sure that the federal government upholds the commemoration and raises awareness of the milestones of our democracy’s history. The Weimar Republic is part of this. Indeed, with the centenary celebrations approaching, Weimar’s role as the birthplace of Germany’s first democracy is taking center stage. We have a unique opportunity to gain new insights into where our democracy is today and how best to promote its future by examining the Weimar Republic’s history.”
