At a joint meeting with Papen and Hindenburg, Hitler demands to be appointed Reichskanzler. However, Hindenburg firmly rejects this demand. At this, Hitler declares he will go into opposition against the Papen government. The day after, an official communiqué is published on Hitler and Hindenburg’s meeting. Hindenburg’s stance therein is perceived by many as a humiliation of and political defeat for Hitler.
