Der Weimarer Republik e.V.
Democracy Should Never Be Taken For Granted
The Weimar Republic was Germany’s first democracy. It was named after the city of Germany’s classical culture, in which the constituent National Assembly met in 1919. At the time, a spirit of optimism was spreading throughout society. Many people hoped that the new democracy would bring better times after World War I. Yet these hopes were dashed in the end. The republic only survived 14 years, and was followed by the Nazi dictatorship, the darkest chapter of German history. Despite its destruction, calling the Weimar era to mind is a valuable endeavor. Some of the problems of the time are shockingly relevant to today’s world, and we can learn valuable lessons from the past. The Weimarer Republik e.V. association was founded in 2013 by citizens who are committed to promoting this goal. Our mission - pursued through a series of projects and events - is to spread the message that democracy should never be taken for granted. Instead, we must fight to protect it each and every day. Feel free to join our association and help us pursue our mission. Come to our events and become a member. Our charter and the form for joining our association are below under “Becoming a member”.
Our Projects & Goals
Our aim is to look back on the history and events of the Weimar Republic, analyzing them and demonstrating their relevance for our democracy of today. The upcoming centenary of the National Assembly of 1919 rapidly approaching, is a very auspicious occasion to do so.
We organize events in a variety of attractive formats to help people connect to the history of the first German democracy. For example, we provide historical tours with actors in Weimar.
In order to spread insights into the Weimar Republic in today’s way, we launched a multimedia exhibition that has been touring Germany since November 2015. We have been turning our website, www.weimarer-republik.net, into the platform for all of our efforts.
One of our core concerns is to promote research and scientific discourse on the Weimar Republic and we are planning to set up a research association to this end.
We are also promoting the creation of a “House of Democracy” in Weimar as an appropriate site to commemorate the Weimar Republic. The same applies to Schwarzburg, where the constitution was signed.
Brochure of Weimarer Republik e.V.
Weimarer Republik e.V. has grown in leaps and bounds, constantly gaining momentum since its founding in February 2013. Numerous projects, events, and networks have already been realized and many more are under way or in the pipeline. The core motor driving these activities forward is the upcoming centenary of the Weimar Republic. From fall 2018, centenary events will be held one after the other in quick succession. In the run-up to these celebrations, the association has put together a brochure taking stock of relevant activities and ongoing projects. Page twenty-eight presents the history of the association, its most important stakeholders, the multimedia touring exhibition, and the Weimar City Museum exhibition. The brochure also focuses on the planned House of the Weimar Republic directly vis-à-vis the German National Theater as well as the other authentic locations of the 1919 National Assembly. In addition, it provides further details on the various areas in which the association works and on the Weimar Republic Research Center set up at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in 2016.
