After the shock of Walther Rathenau’s death, the mark drastically depreciates. The exchange rate index rises from 117.49 in July to 1711.08 in November. Summer 1922 is therefore regarded as the start of the subsequent hyperinflation.

The Reichstag adopts the Law for the Protection of the Republic. It establishes a harsh penalty for conspiracy to murder and gives the national government the means to ban extremist organizations. However, the impact of the law remains limited due to the right-wing views of many decision-makers within the judiciary.
